Margaret Tanner writes awe inspiring descriptions of Australia’s landscapes along with horrifyingly realistic descriptions of the carnage and misery in Europe during World War I that take the reader on an emotional journey that makes her feel as if she is right there in the moment. Ms. Tanner also creates some breathtaking love scenes far from “Edwardian morality and war” that are “pure magic”. These scenes accentuate the emergence of a soul mate, consuming love that gives super strength and courage during the somber, troubled times in which Harriet and Ross carve out a life for themselves.

The antagonists are so vividly portrayed the reader can almost feel the meanness in them—no redeeming qualities--just evil use of social position and power to aggrandize themselves and subjugate others.

This story was very sweet and nicely written. I found myself a bit put out with Harry at times, she does tend to get out of line. The historical research seems to be very solid, and it was interesting to see the Australian view of the war.
I liked the way toe story moved, the pace was good, I believed the people and the interaction. It was not forced or artificial. The dialog was good, and the people were folks I would like to sit and talk to for a bit. I will look forward to reading this author again.

Daring Masquerade edition by Margaret Tanner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved reading this book.
I loved this book. Harry was the sweetest young girl with a firey temper but her love for Ross was strong and passionate. Beautiful love story!
Very good storyline. Characters were defined well and each of the major characters had their own issues. I enjoyed the novel and got through it quite quickly. Would like to read more about the two main characters.
I read this book and it was so good. You can't go wrong with getting this book. Read it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. A great Author.
I've not read many romances set in the time frame of WW1 and set in the Australian outback, with an Australian view of the war's progress. We tend not to think about how the war affected other nations, when our own suffered losses, that's just human nature, I guess. It was very moving and affecting to read about how deeply the Australian troops were entrenched against the German troops and how terrible their losses were.

The heroine in this book is Harriet, always called Harry, who lost her father in the war and who's brother has been sent back with bad injuries, including an amputated hand. Gil and Harry have always been very close siblings, so she's taken a job as a scullery maid, just to earn a little money and be able to visit Gil in the hospital daily. She desperately wants to get Gil away from the city and into the ranches of the outback to help him heal. In order to do that, though, they'll have to pretend that Harry is Gil's kid brother. I loved Harry. She was feisty and sarcastic, brutally honest, often mouthing off to the wrong person, but she is fiercely protective of her family and determined to make things work out through the force of her will alone.

They answer an advertisement for experienced riders to the Devil's Ridge ranch owned by Ross Calvert. Ross lost his brother in the war and has his own injuries and scars, which caused his fiancee to dump him when he came back on injured reserve leave. Ross can't figure out why young Harry makes him so uncomfortable, but he gives the pair a job- Gil with the cowhands and Harry as the cook. Ross is a good hero, he's a leader but compassionate towards Gil when he has nightmares. He protects and stewards his land and resources carefully so they will still be there for generations to come. He doesn't even beat Harry when she probably has it coming for losing her red headed temper and back talking to the boss.

Just wait till he finds out her secret... Will it be better or will he throw her off his property? With Gil still suffering significant PTSD and the possibility that Ross will get called back to duty, the sure and stable future Harry longs for looks far out of reach.

Heat factor moderate.
The story had a lot of good points...it had clever plot and the war scenes were well played out. The author seems to have a good understanding of PTSD. She made the character Gilbert so tortured your heat breaks for him. He is a broken man physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually after returning home from the war...you feel deeply for him.

What I didn't like so much was that I kept getting disgusted with the H/h. I got really tired of the sick puppy dog love the Ross the hero had for his past "love" Virginia. How he thinks he could love such a vapid, vain woman who cruelly rejected him, I don't know. Because of this he treats Harry the heroine terribly. Horribly in fact. He was an a-hole. He only later comes to realize when he's having a near death experience how much he loves Harry. Harry wasn't a bad heroine. I liked her spunk, but at times I was embarrassed for her. All the times she threw herself at Ross declaring her love for him after he stares moon eyed over Virginia was absolutely sickening. Once...okay, twice...alright, but over and over again made me humiliated for her.

I also thought the ending a little abrupt after al the build up. At least an epilogue would have been nice. I wanted to see some characters get their due especially Virginia. At least for her to know she didn't have a hold over Ross in longer. I don't want to say too much and give it all away, but theirs only one welcome home scene and boom you're done!

Like I said this book has a lot of great points, but its frustrating at times. If those kinds of things that I mentioned above don't bother you. Check it out...For a free book its not a bad read and I would recommend it.

Happy Reading!!
another sweeping and intense romance written by Ms Tanner. With a brash and headstrong young heroine and a stern hero, this novel hits on all cylinders. Once more we are treated to a tale set during WW1 and in the sweeping lands of Australia. She has deftly dealt with the subjects of war wounds, both those outward and inward. She also dealt with classism, mob mentality and this book is a great read. Pick it up, along with the others this talented writer has put out.
