DEAD Darkness Before Dawn Volume 8 TW Brown 9781940734149 Books

Darkness Before Dawn is my least favorite book in the series to date, which isn't to say it's a bad book, I still really enjoyed it. It has done nothing to reduce my enthusiasm for this series, just seemed to miss the mark a little to me. My biggest disappointment was the progress of Billy's group. After my favorite book in the series for them in Reborn, I felt like too much was rushed through with this group to pare them down and move them forward; the battle for La Grande really left me wanting more and not in a good way this time. And for fans of Jake the Marine, I was very...put off by his shift in behavior. Maybe it was Jon and Jesus' deaths or all of the horrors he's seen or a collection of it all, but he took a very sharp turn in this novel that didn't seem to fit.

The Vignettes are also getting a little stale in this book. I've kind of been waiting for Chad to finally make the wrong move while trying so desperately to connect with his daughter and he finally seemed to have done it...and then he miraculously escapes only to seemingly be on the verge of death again. His final chapter of the book seems like we know what's coming next, but maybe TW Brown will give us an interesting twist for him next go-round. I have never quite gotten into tale of Jody and the survivors in Hope, Arkansas, but the dilemma they are put into here does peak my interest for what's to come. I would personally like to see another turnover in some of the stories in this section, but will trust the author in their futures.

Kevin and his group once again get distracted from their quest to reach South Dakota. While I didn't like Billy's story much in this book, the action of Kevin's crew definitely kept things exciting. It seemed like they hardly had a dull moment, even though Kevin spends a large amount of time out of said action due to his cat experience at the end of Reborn. My final thought near the end of this book is that I would LOVE to see Trent pop up in the Vignettes in the next book, if nothing else than to see who really made the right choice between he and Kevin!

Anyone who does not read the Author's Notes at the beginning of the books is really missing a treat! I enjoy reading Mr. Brown's thoughts on the progress of the series, the feedback he has received from readers and sometimes whatever seems to be on his mind. But in this one, I got a laugh at his discussion of the child zombies; how he THOUGHT he made it obvious why they behave how they do, but the feedback he's received told him a very different tale. Awesome insight into his creative process and it shows that he really does pay attention to what his readers have to say.

Another disappointment to me has nothing to do with the book itself, but in the fact that I stumbled across this series (yes, pun intended) on Black Friday and have read nothing but these books since. And now, alas, I have caught up to TW Brown's progress and have to WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK:( Definitely a testament to your excellent work, sir, as I cannot wait for that time to come!

DEAD Darkness Before Dawn Volume 8 TW Brown 9781940734149 Books Reviews

Ok.. I love that the author starts every book by telling his readers what he is thinking and asking for our input. I don't do facebook or any of that.. I rarely write a review. I have read all the books and I wish this guy the best because he is a fantastic author who does a really good job of making us get into the heads of the characters. The characters are believable and interesting.. even tho he kills them off when another author would not.. no really happy endings here. much more realistic than most authors.

he also does a good job of showing that the real problem with any doomsday scenario is.. well.. human nature and the types of people who are around after there are no rules. The bad guys are real nightmares..

Some have said that the jumping around between characters or groups is a little hard to follow. I agree to an extent but I think the author does it as well as anyone I have read. these books are really well written and at the top of the zombie genre in my opinion..

So what is the "except" ? In a book with so many really fine characters....The only thing about the characters I have trouble with is pretty much universal in media today and.. seems even worse when such a talented author panders to it.. that of the bad ass woman.. Sorry.. but women are not cage fighters.. women do not beat the crap out of men twice their size.. I know it is popular to make them so in print and film but it just is not so. Women do really well against other women but you will not see them competing with men in violent sports... much less in real life.. it is either pandering or the guy is brainwashed,

Other than that? Well.. the author seems to go to great pains (more than most) to get advise from his readers. things he doesn't know about or thought he did but didn't really.. he seems more willing than most to take advise and make the story more accurate.. say something like military tactics or protocol..

I really cringed tho when in one of his first books he talked about a "Navy Colt 45" the most popular use of the Navy Colt name was an 1851 36 caliber percussion revolver.. he was obviously talking about a 45 acp tho.. now.. there actually was a Navy version of the 1911 Colt 45 acp but.. it only existed for one year... in 1915! In all the years I have been collecting and shooting all types of handguns.. I have never even seen one they are so rare... his characters seem to be loaded down with them.. is this nit picky? sure but seeing as how he is getting so much advise and that he dropped the whole "Navy Colt" thing after the first few books. I was dissapointed to see it show up again in this book.

There are like 100 or more versions of the 1911 Colt made by everyone on the planet.. the very least likely of which you might ever see happens to be the "navy colt" I thing one character in the book carries two of em.

So really? the books are great and the only thing I have against them is on the one hand.. something that everyone wishes were true (the warrior princess) so most find entertaining.. and.. a minor and most likely insignificant firearms error that only a few would care about.

Read the books.. they are some of the best of the breed I have ever read.. including ones by the superstars.. the man deserves to be able to support himself with his work..
